Cathedral of St. Petronio (Basilica di S. Petronio)

Cathedral of St. Petronio in Bologna
Front of the Cathedral of St Petronio: upper part is still incomplete and left brown

5 stars
Its construction was started in 1390 based on designs of Antonio Di Vincenzo, but eventually finished incompletely. It's one of the largest sizes as a catholic church (width 66m X depth 132m X height 51m). Normally an Italian Church has the shape of a cross when viewed from the sky, however this church has only rectangular shape of the part of nave because it's unfinished. On the both sides of the church you will notice that the buried portion of the wall which should have grown into a cross.

The front is decorated with the sculptures including the Blessed Virgin and Child Christ by Jacopo della Quercia. Pink and white color are used mainly, as like its square. Inside is Gothic style; the white stucco and red brick walls can make you feel the warmth. Near the entrance to the left towards the altar there is a sundial. A fantastic ray of light from a small hole in the roof points the sundial on the floor.

St. Stephen's Cathedral (Basilica di S. Stefano)

St. Stephen's Cathedral in Bologna
Square lined with Renaissance palaces and St. Stephen's Cathedral

4 stars
St. Stephen's Cathedral is also known as "the seven churches". In fact, this church is composed by seven buildings. Its origins can be traced back to the 5th century, according to a theory. Internal was constructed in Roman period, Byzantine period and Lombard period, and a mixture of styles creates a unique space.

You can go to the next church from the left side. The 13th century temple in the center is the tomb of St. Petronio. Further back, the church is the 11th century building. These columns supporting the roof are of the Roman period. You can also visit two patios.

Sanctuary of Mary in the Church of St. Luke (Santuario della Madonna di S. Luca)

Sanctuary of Mary in the Church of St. Luke in Bologna
The front of St. Luke located on the hill

4 stars
St. Luke's Church built on a hill is located just outside the old city (altitude 289m). To this church, you can pass under the portico, in total length 3796m. Pillars of the arch were built from 1674 to 1715 and there are 666 numbers in total. This portico starts at the old gate of Saragozza. You will be able to arrive in front of the church in less than an hour, climbing the hill while counting the number of the pillars. Behind of the church you can enjoy wide pastoral landscapes. I definitely recommend you to take a bus no. 20.

In the spring of 1433, when it rained too much to damage the harvest of that year, the picture of Virgin Mary and Child Christ was moved to the heart of the town from the altar of this church. The legend says when this picture arrived at the town, the rain stopped soon. From that time still now, once a year the picture trip to the old town for one week.

Basilica of St. Francis (Basilica di S. Francesco)

Basilica of St. Francis in Bologna
Appearance of St. Francis Cathedral, one of the representative works of Italian Gothic architecture

3stars
This church was completed in 1263, one of the oldest Gothic churches in Italy. It can be seen clearly the influence of French Gothic architecture into the Italian Romanesque building. Outside, a number of arches built to support the weight of high ceilings is particular and majestic.

The interior has a very quiet and solemn atmosphere, which makes you temporarily forget the noise of passing cars and buses near the intersection. The green and white mausoleum situated at the foot of the church is used for enshrined jurists of the 13th century. The bell tower is a work of Antonio Di Vincenzo.
