The church of San Francesco is famous for a fresco of Piero della Francesca "The
Legend of the Holy Cross (Leggenda della Santa Croce)". This work is called
one of the masterpieces of Renaissance paintings. Piero della Francesca from
Arezzo was one of the early Renaissance masters who worked under the Montefeltro
Duke of Urbino. Recently his reputaion in the Renaissance art history was re-estimated.
Tourists are increasing thanks for the recent re-evaluation of Piero della Francesca. When you visit the chapel it's better to make a reservation in advance. After 15 years, the reparation work of "the Legend of Holy Cross" finally finished. It's quite difficult to book because it's limited the number of each entry turn.

This is the most beautiful ando loved church in Arezzo, located in Piazza Grande
in the center of the town. The Pisa-Romanesque facade is very powerful and beautiful.
The bell tower next to the church has 40 windows so that it's called also "Cento
Buche (100 holes)" .
The columns of the bottom are Romanesque style and wide, and the upper columns are narrower Pisa-Lucca style. The bell tower is five stories high, built in the mid-14th century. Behind the church, in the Piazza Grande, the antique market is held once a month (first Sunday and the day before Saturday).
Pisa-Romanesque facade is built in the 1140s-1200s.
I love to travel in Tuscany, and this church Santa Maria della Pieve is one of my favorite churchs among them. We often visit Arezzo to see this church. (August 2004) |
A simple Gothic style Duomo. Inside it has a great fresco "Mary Magdalene" of
Della Francesca.
This beautiful square reminds me Piazza del Campo in Siena. Relaxing atmosphere
along with the towers of medieval buildings. On the first Sunday (and the previous
Saturday) of each month, at this square, one of the largest antique markets in
Italy is held and attracts antique fans from all over Europe. Also in the town
you can find many shops selling antique furnitures.
Every year in June and September, the traditional festival "Saracen Jousting Tournament (Giostra del Saracino) " is held in the Piazza Grande. This game has been organized since 1593. The two representatives are elected from every four districts of the town, and they wear like a medieval knight with a spear riding a horse. They have to run towards the wooden dummy of the Saracen (Buratto Re dell Indie), and compete it with their spear. Who can stab the most central point of the "Saracen" will win. As well as Palio of Siena, this event has become a world-renowned tradition of the Tuscan towns.
Square is designed by the well-known architect and painter Giorgio Vasari from Arezzo.
The Piazza del Campo in Siena is good too, but here this beautiful Piazza Grande in Arezzo is also very beautiful. A fresh blowing wind will refresh you. Write a postcard in this square and send it to friends or family! (Oct. 2006) |
