Siena is distant only 60km south from Florence, however Siena's town is located off from the main arterial roads so it takes a little bit more time. From Rome you can arrive by train, and from Florence there are buses besides trains. The blue buses of the SITA company depart from the bus terminal in Florence so it would be most convenient.
If you arrive by train, there are buses to the center of the town from the central railway station. It takes 30 minutes by walk. Long-distance buses from Florence (Pullman) you can arrive directly at the heart of the town, Piazza San Domenico.

Between Florence and Siena the blue large buses are operated by the SITA company.
Its
bus depart every 30 minutes from 8:00 till 19:00 and it takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Since I was confident of my legs, I walked on the hill to the city from the Siena's train station. To the town it was not so tired, but I became exhausted by visiting the town itself, because of its many undulations. I wanted to go up the tower of Mangia, however I was so tired that I spent lazing hours in the Piazza del Campo. Those who want to visit the town well, it's recommended to take a bus "normally"!
